How to-guide: Ayurvedic Abhyanga (Self Massage)

An Ayurvedic Abhyanga Massage is the queen of all Ayurvedic at-home practices. It offers many healing benefits and is something that with a little practise and consistency will help bolster your overall health and wellbeing.

Ideally, Abhyanga is performed daily - but really, who's got time for that?! I try to work it into my weekly routine - setting aside one day per week where I know I don't have to rush out the door so I can ease into the day with a beautiful self-massage ritual before a warm shower. I also use the opportunity to oil my hair which is constantly in need of extra hydration!

Abhyanga is particularly beneficial in the morning and is a wonderful antidote to the cold, dry, mobile qualities of VATA in the Autumn season but it can be performed at any time of the year and any time of the day.

Selecting specific carrier oils and adding in a couple of drops of various essential oils can also enhance the balancing effects of a self-abhyanga to ensure the best outcomes for balancing all doshas.

This beautiful act of care and kindness is the ultimate gift of self-love and can do so much to help bring healing and restore health. And while it may take a little bit of time + effort, the benefits of this beautiful ritual are so worth it!
